How eligibility is usually assessed in the UK

Most UK weight-management services start from your body mass index (BMI). As a general guide, a BMI of 30 or above is often considered on its own, while a BMI of 27 or above may be considered when there's also a weight-related health condition — for example type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Guidance also recognises that BMI can underestimate health risk for some ethnic groups, so lower thresholds are recommended for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean family backgrounds. The checker above lets you apply those lower thresholds.

These are general criteria, not a fixed rule — the NHS applies higher thresholds than private services, and every provider assesses the whole person, not just a number. Use this as a starting point, then speak to a pharmacist, GP or registered prescriber.

Frequently asked questions

What BMI do you typically need for Mounjaro in the UK?
Weight-management services commonly use a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above when there's also a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Lower thresholds (27.5 and 25) are often applied for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds. The NHS applies higher thresholds, and individual providers vary.
Is this checker a guarantee that I can get Mounjaro?
No. This tool only compares your BMI with the general criteria commonly used — it is not a clinical assessment, diagnosis, or recommendation. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine and only a qualified prescriber can decide whether any treatment is appropriate for you after a full consultation.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres. For example, 90kg and 1.75m gives a BMI of about 29.4. This checker does the maths for you in either metric or imperial units, and shows which NHS weight band you fall into.
Does BMI tell the whole story?
No — BMI is a useful general guide but it doesn't account for muscle mass, body composition, or where fat is carried. A prescriber considers your overall health, history and other measurements alongside BMI. Treat this as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict.

Educational tool — not medical advice. This calculator is for general information only. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine. Always follow the dosing instructions given by your prescriber and the patient information leaflet, and never change your dose or use click-counting without professional guidance.
